Amway Nutrilite Health Institute to participate in 2012 China–Korea Joint International Phytonutrient Symposium

NUTRILITE™ Scientist Dr. Keith Randolph to present the evolution of the antioxidant paradigm

ADA, Michigan, October 23, 2012 – Leading nutritionists from Canada, Japan, China and Korea, including a NUTRILITE scientist, will give presentations October 26 in Beijing, China as participants in the 2012 China-Korea Joint International Phytonutrient Symposium.  The event, hosted by the China Nutrition Society (CNS) and the Korean Society of Food Science and Technology (KoSFoST), will showcase the latest research and essential roles of phytochemicals for human health.  Amway China Ltd and Amway Korea both sponsor the event.

Keith Randolph, Ph.D., a director of research and development at the Amway Nutrilite Health Institute in Buena Park, California, will present the evolution of the antioxidant paradigm, or how science is evolving its perspective on how phytonutrients found in plant botanicals can buoy the body’s own defense mechanism to fight against oxidative stress.

“Recently, researchers have identified plant foods containing phytochemicals that trigger antioxidant protection mechanisms in the human body,” says Randolph. “This research is in its early stages, but we have data that shows cruciferous vegetables as being particularly potent inducers of antioxidant response within the body.”

High nutritional values and the beneficial health effects of various phytonutrients has been the subject of extensive research for many years. Carl Rehnborg, founder of Nutrilite, began his research into the benefits of a plant-based diet and phytonutrient based supplementation nearly 100 years ago during his travels in China.  In recent times, there has been renewed interest in the discovery of phytochemicals in plants that may be beneficial to health both in the East and the West.

CNS and KoSFoST will host an additional event, the Regulatory Workshop of Health/Functional Food, on October 25.  Officials from the China and Korea Food and Drug Administration will share ideas and experience in regards to the administration and regulation of health food, with emphasis on plants and plant ingredients.

As co-sponsors, Amway China Ltd, Amway Korea and Nutrilite Health Institute worked closely with the organizers to promote these events to foster communication between scientists, scholars and officials.
